A board game called Settlers of Catan came out in 1995.
It’s pretty basic: just a few hex tiles and rudimentary bits of coloured wood.
Strange then, that this represents probably the most-loved board game of all time.
Ranked at 193rd on the most popular board games website, the reason for Catan’s success is simple.
It’s like weed.
Catan is the gateway drug for so many people; it’s the way that people first make the leap from the shitty staples like Monopoly and Cluedo to the real games.
For many, it marks the moment that people first realised that board games can actually be pretty fun. It opens the door to a whole new world of games, and is a hallmark of any gamer’s collection.
To celebrate all the good that Catan has brought then, we’ve compiled a set of nice pictures that feature the lovingly home-made Catan sets that people have made, from edible boards to carpentry masterpieces.
If you haven’t had the chance to give Catan a go before, then don’t be afraid to give it a go – especially if you know someone who can explain the rules on your first time.
It might just hook you in, and before you know it you’ll be cracking out the hard stuff on a Friday night, neck deep in the Twilight Imperium rules book. And you’ll remember that Catan is where it all began.
